"You Must Squeegee the Shower" - and other useless rules

In my house we have this rule: Last Person to Shower Must Squeegee the Shower.

Listen to the audible version of this post at: God in Sixty Seconds

It sounds like a great rule.

But the problem is that it’s had the opposite effect. It’s brought out the worst in me.

If I know I’m going to be the last person to shower, then I simply don’t shower. I’ll wait until the next day. Because I don’t want to be the guy who has to squeegee the shower.

Because of a good rule, the shower doesn’t get squeegeed. I also stay dirty.

We had a perfectly good law. But my selfish sinful human spirit wrecked it.

It’s the same in the Bible. It’s full of God’s good laws: “Love your Neighbour.”

But our sinful human spirit perverted it to: “Love your neighbour. Hate your enemy” (Matt. 5:43)*

This is why Jesus comes. Not to give us more rules, laws, and commands. But to give us a new Spirit.

A Spirit that loves our enemies.

And yes, a Spirit that squeegees the shower when it’s my turn.

Ezekiel 36:26-27
